GEMS Project
What does it mean to grow older? Is it the greying of your hair or the wrinkling of your skin? It often seems like aging is presented as something to slow down, to fight off, or even apologise for.
Women in particular face unique challenges when it comes to aging. Grey should be dyed. Wrinkles should be smoothed. A woman is often not valued for the wisdom of her years, but instead on her ability to hide them. With such a large emphasis placed on youth and beauty, women entering their 60s often begin feeling invisible.
But what if it didn’t have to be that way?
The GEMS project aims to eliminate the stigma around aging and provide women entering their senior years with inspiration, role models, and advice on how to grow old with pride and optimism. It also encourages people with senior women in their lives to listen to them, and record their wisdom and experiences.
